Steve Jobs Knew About iPhone signal problems before launch

A senior Apple engineer warned Steve Jobs about potential signal problems with the iPhone 4 as far back as last year reports Bloomberg who say they got their info from a person familiar with the situation but who doesn’t want to be named.
Apparently antenna expert Ruben Caballero was concerned that the design of the phone and specifically the position of the antenna could lead to dropped calls and said that it “presented a serious engineering challenge”.
Quoting another unnamed source, the news agency also says that a network operator raised concerns about the position of the antenna prior to the iPhone’s launch last month.
There are also reports that a US consumer watchdog had experienced difficulties when testing the iPhone and therefore said they couldn’t recommend it.
All this makes you wonder why Apple took such a risk. Apple has made its name by producing quality products and fostering brand loyalty so all this hassle with the latest version of their hugely popular iPhone is bound to be posing a major headache for Jobs.
Surely he didn’t think the problems would just go away though.
Users started complaining about the signal and reception problems immediately after the iPhone launched on June 4th and the issue hasn’t been far away from the headlines ever since.
All sorts of possible reasons have been put forward as to the cause of the iPhone’s woes but so far it still remains a big of an enigma.
There has been quite a bit of speculation that Apple may even have to issue a recall on the iPhone, which would tarnish their almost impeccable reputation, but some say this is unlikely as not every handset appears to have the problem.
Although Apple shares rose this year, possibly in response to the successful release of the iPad, they have recently fallen as a result of the iPhone issues.
“The stock is being impacted by general concerns about the impact this is having to the brand, and the financial impact, and the uncertainty about what Apple will do about this,” Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, Oregon told Bloomberg News. However “A product recall is extremely unlikely”.
At the time of writing, Apple haven’t commented on the latest claims and neither has Caballero but the Cupertino based company are holding a press conference at their headquarters today (Friday 16th July) about the iPhone’s problems so we should know more in the coming days.
